What to Look For in a Hybrid Table Saw

Having the right table saw to use for your projects not only allows you to work on them effectively and efficiently; choosing the right one that best fits your needs is important. Nowadays, the hybrid table saw is the go-to table saw of most home project people.

A hybrid table saw is the result of the need between having the durability of a cabinet saw with the price, movability and weight of a contractor saw without sacrificing performance.

With the rise of DIYers in the last few years, the demand for this type of saw has increased. Because of this, there are now quite a number of hybrid table saws available on the market today, so finding one that has all the features it is intended for can be quite daunting.

Here is a quick guide on what you should look for when shopping around for your very own hybrid table saw:

Horsepower of the motor and voltage requirements

You could say that this is the most important feature of a table saw. Without sufficient horsepower to cut wood pieces, the table saw is pretty much useless. Check to make sure that the motor of the table saw has enough horsepower for the type of job you’ll be working on.

Along with the horsepower, available voltage is also another consideration that you should look at when checking motor power. Generally, a product with a 1.5 to 2 horsepower motor can operate on a standard household 120-volt circuit.

However, you should take note that a 2-horsepower motor can draw up to 24 amps so it should be the only equipment operating on a 20-amp circuit, otherwise things can overheat pretty fast.

Typically, a hybrid table saw with this amount of motor horsepower can cut wood up to 2 inches thick. Anything beyond that may not give you the results that you want.

Now, if you want a table saw with a little bit more performance, then one with a 3- to 5-horsepower motor would be the best choice — basically because it will give you more options in the thickness of wood that you can cut. A hybrid table saw with this amount of power can cut hardwood 3 inches thick or more.

It is important to take note, though, that with this much horsepower, the voltage requirements will increase. A table saw with this amount of motor power needs about 240 volts to operate. Also, kickback is something you’ll have to remember when working on such powerful motors.

Kick Switch

It may not be a big deal but checking to see if a table saw has a kick switch is really quite important. It is not always possible for you to remove your hands from a piece of wood while cutting, which can potentially cause some safety issues. So, being able to switch off a machine with a foot or knee is important.

Ease of Use

The main purpose of a hybrid table saw is so you can use a table saw that can deliver with ease when operating it. If it is not easy to use then it defeats the entire purpose of having one. When choosing a hybrid table saw, make sure that all the parts and pieces are easy to use and maneuver, the saw is easy to adjust, replacing the blade is a snap, the accuracy of the blade can be calibrated easily, and the hand wheels turn easily.

Flesh Sensor

A flash sensor is one of those features that may seem just an add-on but when it comes to safety it is one the major things that you should look for. It can definitely increase the price a little but it is well worth it if we are talking about the risks.

With a little bit of research, you can find a hybrid table saw that will work for you. It is just a matter of knowing what you want it to do and how you want it to perform.
