Hybrid Table Saw

If you don’t know what a hybrid table saw is, you are about to find out. A hybrid table saw is a great mix of Portability and capacity, which has made the hybrid table saw one of the most sought after table saw options out there.

This article is going to cover what a hybrid table saw is, what to look for when buying one, what the benefits are, and we’ll also share with you what we think the best hybrid table saws are.

What Is A Hybrid Table Saw?

A hybrid table saw is a great middle ground mix of the contractor table saw, and the cabinet style table saw. A hybrid table saw a similar motor as a highly portable contractor table saw, but also contains many of the different features of a higher end cabinet style contractor saw.

The hybrid table saw has an internally mounted motor like a cabinet saw and also have lighter trunnions. They tend to come in a medium size with a medium cutting and ripping capacity, and many different safety and precision features such as an advanced fence, miter gauge, and dust collection ports.

A hybrid table saw is a great option to go with if you need a good table saw for your shop that can handle almost any job except for the very largest.

Things To Consider When Buying A Hybrid Table

These are big power tools, and that usually means a pretty hefty price. So to ensure that you spend your money wisely, there are a few key aspects that you should keep in mind. Here are the most important considerations to make before you buy any hybrid table saw.

The Size & Weight

If you need a more portable table saw, then you should find one that weighs under 350 pounds. Finding one that has wheels is a bonus if you want to be able to move the table saw around.

Keep in mind that hybrid table saws can weigh up to 500 pounds. These tend to have some additional features and are made of more solid materials and usually, have some extra power.

The weight of the saw will also determine its size to a certain degree. If you need a hybrid table saw for very large projects that have a high ripping capacity, you will want a model that has around 50 inches of ripping capacity to the right of the blade, you’ll most likely want a model that has an extension table.

If you need a hybrid table saw for smaller jobs, one with a 30-inch ripping capacity will probably do.

The Power

Another important thing to keep in mind when buying a hybrid table saw is how much power it has. A 120-volt table saw with a 1.75 horsepower motor that can deliver at least 3,400 rounds per minute which are ideal for smaller and less power-intensive jobs.

However, if you need a saw for those bigger jobs, then you will want a model that can also function with 240 volts, has at least a 2 horsepower motor, or ideally 3 horsepower, which provides at least 3,800 to 4,300 rounds per minute of blade spin. How fast the blade spins and how powerful the motor is will determine what kind of materials you can cut through.

Blade Elevation & Cutting Capacity

Another thing that you need to think about before buying a table saw is its cutting capacity.

A cutting capacity of 3 – 1/8 inches with the blade at a vertical 90 degrees and 2 – 3/16 inches with the blade at 45 degrees should be the minimal cutting depth of any table saw you get. Also, the blade should obviously be able to bevel anywhere from 90 degrees (vertical) to 45 degrees to the left.

The Fence & Miter

A decent hybrid table saw will have a fence on a good rail system that making it easy to move, it should be easy to measure the distance between the blade and the fence, and the fence should be made of a material that makes it easy to push the wood along it. Finally, the fence needs to have a good clamping or securing system so you can rest assured that it won’t move while you work.

On that same note, any hybrid table saw you get should also have a good miter gauge. Some miter gauges can go from being at 0 degrees all the way to 45 degrees to the right, which is ideal for basic straight and cross-cutting jobs.

However, there are also more advanced versions where the miter gauge can move up to 60 degrees to the right or left, which is ideal for professionals making many different kinds of cross cuts. Finally, the miter gauge should ideally rest in a standard T-slot. This will ensure that you can remove it and replace it with various after-market add-ons such as a cross cut sled.

The Cabinet

The final thing to consider before you buy a hybrid table saw is the cabinet which houses all of the main components. You should make sure to get a fully enclosed cabinet. This may make it harder to get to the saw if something breaks, but it also helps protect the saw better. Moreover, the cabinet should also include a dust collection feature, or at least a dust collection port to hook up an external dust collector. A closed base is also ideal because it helps to reduce noise and vibration that all table saws make.

The Benefits Of A Hybrid Table Saw

A hybrid table saw usually has a decent amount of power, it will have the features of a cabinet saw (T-slot miter gauge, telescopic fence, tool-less blade guard, riving knife, and more). In essence, the benefit of having a hybrid table saw is that it is a good middle ground option between the smaller and less powerful contractor saw, and the larger more powerful cabinets saw.

  • Comes with a lifetime service agreement.
  • Not ideal for very large jobs or extremely thick materials.
  • Back wheels cannot pivot.
  • Lateral adjustment of trunnions makes blade adjustment slightly tricky.
  • Not as powerful as some other options.

This is a decent option to go with if you need a middle ground saw that is ideal for smaller and medium size jobs. It has a medium power level, medium ripping capacity, it’s fairly lightweight, and gives you a decent amount of room to work with. This is not the biggest and baddest saw on the block, but it’s quite reliable and will do well with most shop jobs.

Features

The RIDGID features a fairly powerful 13 amp motor that delivers you with 3,450 rounds per minute of cutting power. While this is not the most powerful saw around, it still has more than enough juice for small and medium sized jobs.

The same can be said for the blade elevation and cutting capacity. Once again, this saw is ideal for smaller and medium sized jobs but unfortunately, lacks the cutting capacity to get through very thick materials.

Something that we do like about The RIDGID Table Saw is that it has a fairly large ripping capacity. It has a maximum ripping capacity of 30 inches, which is thanks to the neat telescopic fence. With the addition of left and right extension wings, you can also increase the ripping capacity of this saw by a substantial amount.

The telescopic fence is easy to adjust, rests on easy glide rails for quick movement, and it can be securely locked down with the mounting mechanism. Furthermore, the miter gauge that comes included can be adjusted from 0 to 45 degrees, and it can also be replaced with several different attachments such as a sled.

Another thing that makes this a convenient option to go with is the cast iron table that provides for a smooth glide and also minimizes noise and vibration. Moreover, the solid metal design combined with cabinet mounted cast iron trunnions and an enclosed motor help to ensure the longevity and durability of this saw even more.

Yet another great thing about this hybrid table saw is the variety of safety features that it comes with. It has anti-kickback pawls to stop wood pinching and to reduce kickback, it has a riving knife to decrease kick back even more, plus to stop blade rotation, and the advanced blade guard helps to improve safety even more.

The blade guard is see through for maximum visibility, it is easily adjusted for various purposes, and it helps secure the wood to the table as well.

Finally, The RIDGID Hybrid Table Saw also has a convenient kickstand wheel system which lets you elevate the saw off of its legs onto a set of wheels, thus making it very easy to move around your shop. Moreover, this saw is also fairly lightweight, thus increasing its portability even more.
